What American's Who Voted for Donald Trump Were Really Thinking
The extent to which Trump won could not be predicted by the media or their polls because of the majority of Americans who were fed up with the political process and did not get involved in the arguments, social media campaigns/discussions or polling. You also need to understand where the people who voted for Trump are coming from: they are your neighbors, your friends, the people who didn't speak up when you got into a political argument and the people who didn't post their political position on Facebook. They are not some evil movement that wishes harm on the entire country. This majority was hidden, much like those who voted for Hillary in the primaries when the socially active and outspoken Bernie supporters couldn't figure out where all the Hillary supporters where coming from because no one seemed to be as on fire for her as they were for Bernie.
I didn't vote for Trump, but I understand the appeal. He is an interruption to the status quo: anti media and anti politician. Bernie Sanders had similar appeal. Hillary more than anything was viewed as a continuation of the political wheel. Trump reflected the views of many of his public and outspoken supporters. But it's the silent voters that helped him win. They aren't necessarily racist, sexist or for building a wall. They likely did not have some deep hatred for Hillary. But they saw a guy who wasn't a politician who was coming in to disrupt the whole system and supposedly not be held back by silent interests. It was a long term investment into breaking the wheel and forcing politicians to re think the political campaigns that have not helped the average American. He represents anarchy to a certain extent, and enough Americans have tasted the bottom and want somebody to turn the system upside down. It's why I voted 3rd party. Bernie was the only democrat who would have stood a chance against this fed up majority.
But what about the things he said, the things he did, the horrible things he supposedly stands for? When you're a politician and everything you say and do in public is scripted by a team of media and political professionals...the person that acts like themselves is no longer scary because you know who they are...it's the person you don't truly know that scares you. If you journey to the center of the country where all the states went red last during the political broadcasts on the night of November 8th, those people will tell you they care about political action, not personal indiscretion.
